Castle Royle men’s team of Tim Shin, Nic Scrutton and Tom Wilde overturned a one-shot deficit on a rain-affected final day to secure the English Men's Champion Club by two strokes at Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club.
Castle Royle has long been a home for young golfers to cut their teeth and improve their skills, with the winning teammates developing their game at the club since their early teenage years. The Club Company ambassador and professional golfer Cara Gainer has also been a member since she was 14, continuing her coaching with England Pro Rob Watts.
Heavy overnight rain and a poor weather forecast led to the final round being reduced to nine holes. Unbeknown to them at the time, the par-5 ninth and their final hole of the round became pivotal, with all three players making birdie. The team now head on to represent both their club and country at the European Championships at Cabot Bordeaux golf course in France next month.
Nick Scrutton was keen to praise his teammates: "We've played a lot of golf together and they’re two fantastic players. It was not an easy hole, we'd spoken about different tactics on it, and I think we played it three different ways today. What’s won it for us is our putting as the greens here are presented absolutely beautifully. The water they’ve taken on today, to play the way they have done is a credit to the greenkeeping staff."
The recent success of the Faldo Futures Series, which saw a third of all finalists qualify through our venues, showcased the importance of supporting the next generation of golfers who represent the future of this great sport.
